On December 31, 2002, Hitachi and IBM completed a transaction pursuant
to which IBM combined its hard disk drive operations with Hitachi's,
forming a new company called Hitachi Global Storage Technologies.
This transaction did not include IBM's storage systems business,
and IBM continues to offer a comprehensive selection of IBM TotalStorage
solutions and products. For more information, visit IBM
TotalStorage® for the best in disk systems, tape systems,
storage networking, and storage software.
Hard disk drive support prerequisites
If your hard disk drive was purchased as original equipment, pre-installed
in your IBM personal computer, then you do not need support from
Hitachi. The same warranty terms and conditions for your personal
computer exist with the pre-installed hard disk drive. Service and
support would be handled by IBM. To determine if your IBM personal
computer is under warranty, visit our warranty
look up page. Be sure to have available your machine type, model,
and serial number of your computer. Our warranty look up portal
does not provide hard disk drive warranty status.
If your hard disk drive or Microdrive was purchased as an additional
storage accessory for your IBM or original equipment manufacture
personal computer, then proceed to the Hitachi
Global Storage Technologies support web site. Using the
warranty
status tool, you can check whether your hard disk drive is covered
by Hitachi.
NOTE: Hard disk drives supported by IBM have an IBM FRU number.
Hard disk drives purchased as an additional storage accessory may
have an IBM FRU number as well as Hitachi Global Storage Technologies
branding. The FRU number can be located on the sticker on the top
side of the hard drive (see the example below).

If your optional hard disk drive is not supported by Hitachi, based
on the serial number provided via the Hitachi warranty status portal,
please visit our service
and support website for additional assistance.
All hard disk drives should be recognized with the personal computer
it is installed in, if it has an operating system already configured,
e.g., DOS, Windows, Linux. Just follow the normal hardware installation
procedures when installing your pre-configured hard disk drive.
If your optional hard disk drive is brand new, you should have some
configuration files with the device, so it can be recognized by
the computer's BIOS (Basic Input Output System). Installing those
BIOS drivers allow the computer to recognize an additional storage
device. Once your hard disk drive is installed in your IBM personal
computer, and you have installed an new operating system, if you
find that your IBM personal computer needs additional updates, e.g.,
BIOS, firmware, or configuration updates, select from the following
list of IBM computing products for additional solutions.
