To extend the life of your hard drive and help avoid data loss:
- Avoid jarring the system while the hard drive is operating
- Suspend, hibernate, or shut down the computer completely before moving it, AND
- Wait 30 seconds after initiating suspend, hibernation, or shutdown before moving the system so the hard drive can stop.
Place your ThinkPad® notebook at least 13 cm away from any electrical appliance that generates a strong magnetic field to avoid damage to your data.
Use a soft cloth moistened with non-alkaline detergent to clean the exterior of your ThinkPad notebook; wipe the LCD display with a dry, soft cloth.
To extend your battery life, decrease the LCD brightness while using your ThinkPad notebook, employ the standby and hibernation power-saving modes, and remove and store the battery pack in a cool place if you will not be using the computer for a long period of time.
Take corrective actions immediately when the battery status indicator is blinking orange and your notebook sounds three consecutive beeps. If your notebook enters suspend mode because of a low-battery condition, data in memory might be lost.
Conserve your battery! If you need to operate your notebook by using battery power, but you don't need to use your PCMCIA modem card, remove it from its slot. These cards use battery power even when you're not using them.
