Tips for ThinkPad users on travel, performance, security and more

Travel

From ThinkPad Owners
Here's a tip for travelers who don't carry a portable printer: if you need to print a document while on the road, send the document as a fax to the fax machine in the hotel lobby.

Additional Tips
Use a carrying case that will provide excellent cushion and protection for your ThinkPad® notebook.

Remove any media from the diskette drive or CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive before transporting your ThinkPad notebook.

If you are traveling internationally, get the appropriate power cord for the country you are visiting.

For international traveling, change your modem's Dialing Properties for the country you are visiting (Start/Settings/Control Panel/Modems/Dialing Properties.)

Prior to your trip, check with your hotel to see if they provide an analog phone line and a removable plug; if not, then you will need an acoustic coupler to use your modem. Many hotels are equipped with digital phone lines, which can damage your modem without an acoustic coupler.

In hotel rooms, keep your ThinkPad notebook and accessories on the desk and away from possible magnets. Many common hotel appliances, such as televisions, alarm clocks, and hair dryers, contain small magnets which can damage your data.

For trans-Pacific flights on Boeing 747s, request a seat at an exit. You may be able to plug your ThinkPad notebook into the 110 Volt/AC outlet in the outside wall of each exit door instead of worrying about running down your batteries. Plus there is the added bonus of having extra leg room in an exit seat!
